SMASHTOP version @VERSION@
Built by Cal Parr of PeachByteSolutions LLC

Smash, shoot, burn and nuke a picture of your desktop. A free, open-source tribute to the
original Desktop Destroyer by Miroslav Němeček (Gemtree Software). This remake isn't
affiliated with the original or its author.

THIS IS A BETA

Everything should work, but this is the first wider test, so expect a rough edge or two.
Found a bug, or something felt off? Tell whoever sent you this, or get in touch through
https://peachbytesolutions.com. It helps to say which weapon, what you did, and your setup
(how many monitors, and their scaling). Starting it as `smashtop.exe --timings` shows how
long each step of starting up took, if it's slow to load.

WHAT'S IN THIS ZIP

smashtop.exe The game. There's no installer: just run it.
  README.txt This file.
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums, to check nothing has been tampered with.
  LICENSE-MIT.txt
LICENSE-APACHE.txt The licences. You can use either.
THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt Credits and licences for the open-source libraries built into it.
  source\smashtop-@VERSION@-source.zip
The complete source code the exe was built from (commit @COMMIT@).

RUNNING IT

  Double-click smashtop.exe. It needs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

It takes a picture of all your screens and puts it up full-screen, which can take a few
seconds with lots of monitors. Pick a weapon from the menu at the top of the main screen
(or press the key under it), then click anywhere. Esc quits.

"WINDOWS PROTECTED YOUR PC"?

You may see this blue SmartScreen warning the first time you run it. Windows shows it for
programs that haven't been downloaded by many people yet, and for programs that aren't
signed with a paid code-signing certificate. This one is new and isn't signed (yet), so
the warning doesn't mean anything has been found wrong with it.

To run it anyway: click "More info", then "Run anyway".

If you'd rather check first, that's sensible. Everything it's built from is in the source
folder, you can compare checksums (below), and you can build it yourself.

A few antivirus programs are wary of new programs that take screenshots and cover the
whole screen, which is exactly what this game does. If yours flags it, it's a false
positive; you're welcome to check the source to be sure.

WHAT IT DOES TO YOUR COMPUTER (AND WHAT IT DOESN'T)

  * When it starts, it takes one screenshot of your screens. The picture stays in memory.
It's never sent anywhere, and never saved unless you press S (or the camera button).
  * All the damage happens to that picture. Your real desktop, windows and files are never
    touched.
  * It never connects to the internet or to any network.
  * It installs nothing, needs no administrator rights, and doesn't change any system
    settings or the registry.
  * The only things it ever writes are:
%APPDATA%\Smashtop\settings.txt your volume and weapon settings
Pictures\Smashtop\ any pictures you choose to save
To remove it completely, delete the exe and those two folders.

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG

Esc quits. If the game ever seems stuck covering your screen, press Alt+Tab to switch to
something else (it gets out of the way), or Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and end
  "Smashtop".

CHECKING THE DOWNLOAD

SHA256SUMS.txt lists the SHA-256 checksums of the exe and the source zip. To check the exe,
open PowerShell in this folder and run:

      Get-FileHash .\smashtop.exe

The hash it prints should match the one in SHA256SUMS.txt (capitals don't matter), and the
one published alongside the download, if there is one.

Right-click the exe > Properties > Details shows who made it (PeachByteSolutions LLC) and
  its version.

BUILDING IT YOURSELF

The source zip holds everything: the game is written in Rust, and all its sounds and
pictures are made by the code, so there are no hidden parts or extra downloads. Unzip it
and see its README.md. In short, with Rust installed from https://rustup.rs, run this in
  the unzipped folder:

      cargo build --release

and your own copy appears at target\release\smashtop.exe. (It won't be identical
byte for byte to ours, so its checksum will differ.)
